We’re growing our own fresh air!

P4200208

We at Scoil Choilmcille, Blarney Street are doing what we can to improve the air quality in our school. Following an international movement by Green Schools we have introduced potted indoor plants to our school. By choosing plants that purify the indoor air we are helping to clear the indoor environment of pollutants, thereby reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that escape from our school into the outside air.
Research by NASA has shown that a range of health complaints are attributed to exposure to pollutants found in everything from our walls to our floors. It has been proven that ailments such as fatigue, headache, sore throat, cough and dry skin can been reduced by up to 40% and that plants can increase productivity at work and lower levels of stress. These potted plants will not only brighten up our school, but will also create cleaner, fresher air to make a healthier environment for all in the school.
According to NASA, “One potted plant per 100 square feet of floor space can help clean the air”. We at Blarney Street are introducing plants to our classrooms, offices and hallways so that fresh air is produced throughout the school for every ones benefit.

The boys from 5th Class helped Mr. Murphy to plant and distribute the plants around the school.
