Yesterday, February 9th, a selection of our finest players went to represent Blarney Street Boys’ School in a basketball tournament made of up some of the top teams in Cork.
Following their outstanding performance, I spoke to youngest player, Daryl, about his first basketball tournament for Blarney Street Boys’ School.
“The first game we played was against Scoil Barra. We were down 8-2 going into the second half. In the 3rd quarter, Colin just went off! He scored 3 baskets in the 3rd and then I scored the winning basket in the 4th quarter!”
The situation was repeated in Blarney Street’s second game with 10 year old Daryl scoring the winning basket proving that it’s not just Golden State Warriors star, Stephen Curry who never misses!
Despite making the decision to finish with reduced numbers to give their opposition a sporting chance, Blarney St still emerged victorious against their 3rd opponents and continued their winning streak in the Semi-Final with a comprehensive 14-6 win.
Blarney Street started the second half well with Daryl scoring the first four points and 6th Class and Blue Demons star player, Colin H claiming the next basket. After a strong start, Daryl laments, “Nothing would go in!” While eventual winners, Mallow had many strong players in a team of 6th Class players, Daryl picked out their number 12, Daniel as being a particularly strong force to be reckoned with.
Reaching the final marks Blarney Street out as the second strongest team in the county and rumours that LeBron James heard about the sportsmanship and skills on display and is fearing for his place on the Cavaliers team have yet to be denied by Cleveland’s finest.
While Daryl and his dad may disagree on who the best basketball player in the world is (Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant), they both agree that basketball is a top class sport.
“The day was great fun and I and met lots of boys I already knew from Scoil Iosagáin, Padre Pio and Carraig na bhFear and even made some new friends. I would definitely recommend basketball because it’s a great sport and you make lots of friends.”
Mr. Casey was very proud of the teamwork shown by our boys in Neptune Stadium and declared that they were a shining example of skill and sportsmanship. Maith sibh Daryl, Colin, Evan, Emmet, Craig, Luke, Mark, Kane, David Bo and David Bu! Great ambassadors for Blarney Street Boys’ School!
